The Role of Mobile Health Interventions in Improving Medication Adherence Among Hypertensive Patients

Michael Johnson¹, Priya Nair², Sofia Lopez³

Abstract

Poor medication adherence is a major challenge in the management of hypertension, contributing to uncontrolled blood pressure and increased cardiovascular risk. This randomized controlled trial evaluated the effectiveness of mobile health (mHealth) interventions, including reminder messages and virtual counseling, among 1,000 hypertensive patients over a 6-month period. Medication adherence was measured using the Morisky Medication Adherence Scale (MMAS-8), and blood pressure readings were monitored regularly. Results indicated a significant improvement in adherence scores (from 5.2 ± 1.3 to 7.4 ± 0.9, p < 0.001) and reductions in mean systolic and diastolic blood pressure. The study demonstrates that mHealth interventions are an effective strategy to improve hypertension management and patient outcomes.
