The Role of Mobile Health Applications in Improving Diabetes Self-Management

Abstract

Chronic diseases like diabetes require consistent self-management, yet patient adherence remains suboptimal. This study assessed the effectiveness of mobile health (mHealth) applications in enhancing self-management behaviors among adults with type 2 diabetes. A randomized controlled trial enrolled 250 participants, providing the intervention group with a diabetes management app and standard care for six months. Key outcomes measured included glycemic control (HbA1c), medication adherence, and lifestyle modifications. The intervention group demonstrated significant improvements in HbA1c reduction (mean decrease 1.2% vs 0.5%, p<0.01), adherence, and dietary monitoring. These findings suggest mHealth interventions are promising tools for improving chronic disease management in resource-limited settings.
