Prevalence of Type 2 Diabetes and Associated Risk Factors in Middle-Aged Adults

Emma Johnson¹, David Chen²

Abstract

Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) represents a growing public health challenge, especially in urbanized populations exposed to lifestyle risk factors. This cross-sectional study assessed the prevalence of T2DM and its association with dietary habits, physical activity, obesity, and family history in 1,500 adults aged 35–60 years. Fasting blood glucose, HbA1c levels, anthropometry, and lifestyle questionnaires were used to collect data. Findings revealed a T2DM prevalence of 18%, with obesity, high-calorie diet, sedentary behavior, and family history significantly increasing risk (p<0.01). Logistic regression analysis identified obesity (OR 2.7, 95% CI 1.9–3.6) and low physical activity (OR 2.1, 95% CI 1.5–2.9) as the strongest predictors. These results emphasize the need for targeted community-based lifestyle interventions and early screening programs to reduce the burden of T2DM and related complications.
