Mental Health Burden and Coping Strategies Among Healthcare Workers During Pandemics

Ayesha Khan¹, Robert Chen², Mariam Alvi³

Abstract

Healthcare workers (HCWs) face significant psychological stress during pandemics, increasing the risk of burnout, anxiety, and depression. This cross-sectional study assessed mental health outcomes and coping strategies among 600 HCWs across tertiary hospitals during a recent infectious disease outbreak. Standardized questionnaires measured depression, anxiety, and stress levels, while coping mechanisms were explored using the Brief COPE scale. Results indicated that 47% of participants reported moderate to severe anxiety, 38% experienced depressive symptoms, and 55% exhibited high stress levels. Active coping strategies, peer support, and institutional mental health programs were associated with lower psychological burden. The study emphasizes the need for structured mental health interventions and support systems for HCWs in high-stress environments.
