From Farm to Fork: Evaluating Food Safety Knowledge Among Street Vendors in Southeast Asia

Reena Patel¹, Ahmad Fadhil², Christine Wang³

Abstract

Street food vending contributes significantly to food security but poses health risks if safety standards are unmet. A mixed-methods study conducted across Malaysia and Indonesia examined the knowledge, attitudes, and practices (KAP) of 480 street food vendors. Results indicated that while 78% understood the importance of hand hygiene, only 41% practiced proper food storage. Qualitative interviews revealed economic pressures and limited access to clean water as barriers to compliance. Targeted training, improved infrastructure, and regulatory support are essential to reduce foodborne illnesses and enhance vendor livelihoods. The findings underscore the role of culturally adaptive education in informal food economies.
