Evaluating the Effectiveness of School Nutrition Programs on Childhood Obesity

Hannah Lee¹, John Thompson², Lucia Caruso³

Abstract

Childhood obesity poses significant long-term health risks, including metabolic syndrome and cardiovascular diseases. This study assessed the impact of school-based nutrition programs on obesity prevalence among children aged 6–12 years in urban schools. A total of 1,500 students participated in a 12-month program that included healthy meal provision, nutrition education, and physical activity sessions. Body mass index (BMI) z-scores, dietary intake, and physical activity levels were measured pre- and post-intervention. Results showed a significant reduction in BMI z-scores (p < 0.01), increased consumption of fruits and vegetables, and improved physical activity engagement. The study supports the effectiveness of integrated school nutrition programs in promoting healthy behaviors and reducing childhood obesity rates.
