Bridging the Gap: Telehealth Utilization and Satisfaction Among Rural Women During the COVID-19 Pandemic

Helena Boone¹, Abigail Nyarko², Victor López³

Abstract

COVID-19 accelerated telehealth adoption, but rural populations face persistent access barriers. A survey of 600 women aged 20–65 from remote areas of Mexico assessed telehealth use, satisfaction, and perceived barriers during 2021–2023. Approximately 64% used telehealth at least once, with high satisfaction (mean score 4.3/5) related to convenience and reduced travel time. However, 39% cited connectivity issues, and 28% reported digital literacy challenges. Findings highlight the need for gender-sensitive policies supporting broadband expansion and community-based digital training. Telehealth holds promise for advancing rural health equity if infrastructural and educational gaps are addressed.
