Prevalence of Hypertension and Its Risk Factors in Urban Adults

Elias Novak¹, Lina Park², Samuel Torres³, Mila Ahmed⁴

Abstract

Hypertension is a leading risk factor for cardiovascular disease and stroke worldwide. This cross-sectional study examined the prevalence of hypertension and associated risk factors in 1,500 adults aged 30–65 years residing in urban neighborhoods. Blood pressure measurements, anthropometric data, lifestyle information, and medical history were collected. Findings revealed a hypertension prevalence of 32%, with obesity, sedentary lifestyle, high salt intake, and family history identified as significant risk factors (p<0.01). Awareness and treatment rates were low, with only 41% of hypertensive participants on antihypertensive therapy. The study emphasizes the need for population-level screening, health education, and lifestyle modification interventions to reduce the burden of hypertension in urban settings.
