Assessment of Maternal Knowledge and Practices Regarding Exclusive Breastfeeding

Thomas Laurent¹, Ingrid Svensson², Priyanka Sharma³

Abstract

Exclusive breastfeeding (EBF) during the first six months is critical for infant nutrition, immunity, and growth. This study assessed maternal knowledge, attitudes, and practices regarding EBF among 800 mothers attending maternal and child health clinics. Structured interviews collected data on breastfeeding initiation, duration, and perceived barriers. Results showed that 68% of mothers had adequate knowledge about EBF benefits, but only 52% practiced EBF for six months. Common barriers included maternal employment, cultural practices, and lack of family support. Mothers who received antenatal counseling were significantly more likely to practice EBF (p<0.01). The study emphasizes the need for sustained education, workplace support policies, and community engagement to improve EBF rates and infant health outcomes.
