Evaluation of Sanitation and Hygiene Interventions on Diarrheal Disease in Rural Communities

Omar Ahmed¹, Khalid Rashid²

Abstract

Diarrheal diseases remain a leading cause of morbidity and mortality among children in rural areas, primarily due to inadequate sanitation and hygiene practices. This quasi-experimental study evaluated the effectiveness of a combined sanitation and hygiene intervention in reducing diarrheal disease incidence among 900 children under five years in rural communities. Interventions included installation of improved latrines, provision of handwashing stations, hygiene education for caregivers, and safe water storage campaigns. Data on diarrheal incidence, hygiene behaviors, and water quality were collected at baseline and six months post-intervention. Results showed a 35% reduction in diarrheal episodes (p<0.01), increased handwashing compliance (by 42%), and improved household water quality. Caregivers reported higher awareness of hygienic practices and disease prevention. These findings underscore the importance of integrated WASH (Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene) interventions in improving child health and preventing infectious diseases in resource-limited rural settings.
