Examining the Prevalence and Risk Factors of Obstructive Sleep Apnea in Adults

Ahmed Khan¹, Grace Kim², Sunita Iyer³

Abstract

Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a prevalent but underdiagnosed condition associated with cardiovascular and metabolic disorders. This cross-sectional study investigated the prevalence and risk factors of OSA among 1,200 adults attending primary care clinics. Screening was conducted using the STOP-Bang questionnaire, and risk factors were assessed through medical history, BMI, and lifestyle questionnaires. Results showed an OSA prevalence of 22%, with higher risk observed in males, individuals with obesity, hypertension, and those with sedentary lifestyles. Awareness and diagnosis rates were low, highlighting the need for targeted screening and educational interventions in primary care settings to reduce morbidity associated with OSA.
