Prevalence and Risk Factors of Obesity in Adults: A Community-Based Survey

Omar Hassan¹, Priya Reddy², James Okafor³

Abstract

Obesity is a growing global public health challenge associated with increased risk of chronic diseases. This community-based cross-sectional survey investigated the prevalence and determinants of obesity among 1,000 adults aged 20–60 years in urban and semi-urban areas. Body mass index (BMI) and waist circumference were measured, and lifestyle, dietary habits, and socioeconomic factors were collected via questionnaires. The overall prevalence of obesity was 28%, with higher rates among women (32%) compared to men (24%). Significant predictors included sedentary lifestyle, high-calorie diet, and low physical activity (p<0.05). Findings emphasize the urgent need for community-level interventions promoting healthy lifestyle behaviors to curb obesity.
