Introduction
The level of knowledge and awareness about contraceptives among teenagers in South Korea remains a significant concern, as reflected by the ongoing challenges related to teenage pregnancy and reproductive health. This study aimed to evaluate the knowledge and awareness of contraceptives among teenagers attending Matome Malatji High School in the Mopani District of Limpopo Province.
Methods
A quantitative research approach was adopted using a cross-sectional descriptive design. The study was conducted at Matome Malatji High School, a public institution situated in Maseke Village, Phalaborwa, within the Mopani District. The target population included male and female students from Grades 8 to 12, aged between 13 and 19 years. The school had a total of 669 learners—400 females and 269 males. A stratified random sampling method with 50% proportional allocation was employed. Data were collected using a structured questionnaire and analysed through descriptive statistics. Ethical considerations included securing permission to conduct the study, obtaining informed consent, ensuring autonomy, and completing an assent form where applicable.
Results
The results indicated that an average of 54.3% of participants responded “yes” to questions assessing knowledge about contraceptives.
Discussion
The findings reveal a moderate level of contraceptive knowledge among the teenagers surveyed, with 54.3% demonstrating awareness of contraceptive methods. This suggests a critical need for enhanced educational efforts aimed at improving awareness and understanding of contraceptives in this population.
Conclusion
The study concluded that teenagers at Matome Malatji High School possess a moderate awareness of contraceptive methods, highlighting the necessity for comprehensive sex education programs. These programs should aim to deliver accurate and unbiased information on contraceptives and reproductive health. Furthermore, the active involvement of parents and guardians in educating and supporting teenagers on these topics is essential.
